A few have asked about the accident that changed my life and drove me to write the book.  Here are a few pictures of my H1 that protected my family from something that could have been catastrophic and completely life changing. We were on a trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and wanted to take the back roads, the Mohave Trail.  The same trial that the wagons came out to California on, it is a Level 1 trail (easiest),  my wife was driving on a wide dirt road and there were a few curves and the last one she went around they had just graded and the truck went sideways, no problem for an H1, after going back and forth, side to side a few times she hit a huge hole with a pile of dirt and it slung us in a tumble like we were put in the dryer!  Next thing we know is things are flying everywhere, horrible metal sounds, glass breaking, the big booms of everytime the truck was hitting the dirt … then we land on all fours!  Engine still running, still drivable but wow was she a mess!

The positives: We were all safe, 2 adults, 2 children, 2 dogs, my wife had a small cut on her head from the Ham Radio speaker mount and I had a small cut on my hand from I guess some glass maybe.  The truck did it’s job, it protected us.  It made us aware actually how fragile life really is.  We were brought back to reality that it truly is only a machine.  The understanding that I was not buckled and neither was my daughter and nothing happened to us!  The ability to have such a passion to express what I thought my children would need if I were not here in book form, I can go on for days!

 We as a family are so grateful for this experience, we learned a lot and it changed our lives for the better, why, because we allowed it to and that was our expectation!

The biggest question from people that don’t know me is “Did you ever get another Hummer” and the answer is YES!  I immediately went out and bought another H1 and went offroading!  All in all I have had 3 H1′s and my wife drives and H3 a true testimony on how we feel about the Hummer brand!  If that is not a testimony … I don’t know what is!

I have been speaking with a few of my coaching clients, real estate clients and others throughout the course of the past week and a topic that has been prevalent is FAILURE or things just aren’t going right.  It must be the Holiday Blues one said.  It doesn’t matter the time of year, month, day or hour, what it has to do is one thing   …   your mindset!     Lets look at Failure briefly. 

 How often in our lives do we fail … I can only speak for myself, I fail everyday, many times a day, sometimes many times an hour!  Do I get bummed out?  Absolutely not!  Because I understand that everytime I fail, I get even closer to that BIG win and success is only a few steps away.  We have all experienced it, we gave up a couple of feet away from a huge success and someone else got the win.  failure is just an event, an event just like success.  It is not a person, it is not a dark cloud, it is just something that happened, the true GREAT thing about failure is the lesson.  If you can just learn from the lesson, you have created a success out of the failure.  Remember this, it is not the success that is the end target, it is not about getting the ultimate goal … it is all about the Journey.  Why is it that some amass huge fortunes, lose it all and in a few years are back on top?  They mastered the Journey!  Perfect example: Donald Trump!  He is a legend and is all about the Journey!

To help with this more, here is a tool that I use virtually everyday.  If you can play this game that I do all the time and that is for anything that is a negative in your life … write a list of positive things to come out of the negative experience.  Example: My Grandfather died and my family was devastated including my kids.  My Grandmother asked me to get there like now, she was 1400 miles away and there was not a flight for 2 days with availabilty for my family so we hopped in the brand new Suburban and we were off, within about 8 hours we were going through a hail storm the size that seemed to be like golf balls, in a Suburban that was 2 days old!  It wasn’t a concern at that point.  We were not going to let anyone or anything get in our way of our committment!  So our GAME was that our family, Mom, Dad and three children were going to write a list of 20 positive things to come of Grandpa’s death.  ONLY because we were looking for the positives we found them, ONLY because we had the EXPECTATION of positive things to come to us and ONLY because we were open to the opportunity and the possibility of something good to come of this tragic event we had over 20 things in less than a day and a half before we arrived safely at Grandma’s house. 

The whole process was much easier to deal with just thinking of the positives instead of dwelling in all the other stuff.  So when you have failure how do you take it?  Are you hurt?  Do you get depressed?  Is it hard to deal with?  OR do you find the lesson, learn from it and move on?  Can you make a list of positives to come of your negative?  What if success is two feet away and you give up?  What if another hour of persistence would change your ENTIRE life?  You will never know UNLESS you put forth that effort!  Are YOU willing to go that extra few feet? 

So with the thought of Failure being positive and not negative here is a couple of affirmations I say that help me, they all start like this: “I never see failure as failure only as an opportunity to” and this is where you fill in the blank with stuff like: “develop myself into a better person” or “become stronger with each lesson I learn”  or “develop my sense of humor”  or ”practice my game and learn to play better”  or “get feedback and change the course of my direction to my intended target”.  You can fill in the end to whatever it is that suits your situation.  Always remember the people who fail the most are the ones who are the most successful!  If you are not failing, then you are not attemping and if you are not attemping YOU need to take more action.

I can say all of this because I have gone from homeless, living on the street without even a penny in my pocket, to a life of complete abundance.  Why?  Because I learn from the lesson, I am persistent, make decisions quickly and enjoy life … what are you doing today to better yourself and making yourself more valuable?  Create value in yourself and your life will change for the better today!  Do it today, what do you have to lose?  Answer: You have nothing to lose and everything to gain!

Veterans Day gives Americans the opportunity to celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. However, most Americans confuse this holiday with Memorial Day, reports the Department of Veterans Affairs. What’s more, some Americans don’t know why we commemorate our Veterans on Nov.11. It’s imperative that all Americans know the history of Veterans Day so that we can honor our former servicemembers properly.

A Brief History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislature that was passed in 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.’” As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress — at the urging of the veterans service organizations — amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971.

Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11.

Celebrating the Veterans Day Holiday

If the Nov. 11 holiday falls on a non-workday — Saturday or Sunday — the holiday is observed by the federal government on Monday (if the holiday falls on Sunday) or Friday (if the holiday falls on Saturday). Federal government closings are established by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management — a complete schedule can be found here. State and local government closings are determined locally, and non- government businesses can close or remain open as they see fit, regardless of federal, state or local government operation determinations.

United States Senate Resolution 143, which was passed on Aug. 4, 2001, designated the week of Nov.11 through Nov. 17, 2001, as “National Veterans Awareness Week.” The resolution calls for educational efforts directed at elementary and secondary school students concerning the contributions and sacrifices of veterans.

The difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day

Memorial Day honors servicemembers who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle. Deceased veterans are also remembered on Veterans Day but the day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime.

As a Veteran myself and having served during the Libyan Incident, Desert Shield and Desert Storm, being attached to the USS Saratoga CV-60 I salute all of our brave men and women currently serving in our Armed Forces and to those of you that have already served, Thank you for your service and our freedom!
